San Ildefonso black pot with matte black decoration. The work of Marvin and Frances Martinez. Signed in pencil "Marvin & Frances Martinez San Ildefonso" on the bottom. Height 1½ inches, diameter 4 3/4 inches. Circa xxxx. Marvin was born September 9, xxxx into the internationally renowned family of potter Maria Martinez. He and Francis work in the traditional matte black-on-black design of his grandparents, Adam and Santana. Tradition is important to them and their three children are learning pottery. Francis polishes the pots and Marvin paints them. He is known for his depictions of the avanyu, the water serpent, that his Great Grandfather Julian made famous.
